Nicknamed the “Padellone” by Italian collectors, Ref. 3448 was Patek Philippe first’s automatic perpetual calendar watch, replacing the manually wound references 1526, 2438 and 2497. Introduced in 1962, it was furthermore the first self-winding perpetual calendar produced in series by any manufacturer. According Patek Philippe literature only 582 pieces left the manufactory till 1982. Reference 3448 was available with four different dial styles: small enamel baton minute divisions (1962 to circa 1965); outer bead minute divisions and small date ring (1965 to circa 1973); bead minute divisions and large date ring (1971 to circa 1978); printed (not enameled) small baton minute divisions after 1978 until the end of production. The model ceased production around 1982. Ref. 3448 was discontinued to make way for the reference 3450 with leap year indication. With the series starting with movement number 1,119,000, the present watch, movement no. 1,119,343, is the 344th example made.

Ref. 3448 is described and illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches, by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, plate 447, page 288. The first example of the model, bearing movement no. 1’119’000, is described and illustrated in Patek Philippe Museum, Patek Philippe Watches, Volume II, page 296, as well as one from 1982, page 297.
