Chronograph “Toffee” Ref. 533

PATEK PHILIPPE, REF. 533J, CALATRAVA CHRONOGRAPH, “TOFFEE”

ICONEEK price: SOLD

Launched in 1937, reference 533 with its Calatrava case, flat bezel and elongated lugs is a chronograph instantly recognizable as a Patek Philippe. In production for almost 20 years, only approximately 150 examples are known today making this watch one of the rarest chronograph models of the brand.

The model was in production until 1956. The model is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 264.

The model has a three-body construction: a tonneau-shaped plain gold case with downturned lugs and rectangular gold chronograph pushers in the band, a snap on flat coin edge gold bezel, a snap on solid case back. Reason why the model is also called the Calatrava Chronograph, with its flat bezel, compared to the concave one on the famous Ref. 130. For both references, case maker was Emile Vichet. Ref. 533 was produced in yellow gold, as well as pink gold, and extremely few in stainless steel 8only one known actually). To the best of our knowledge, less than 110 pieces appeared back on the market. The case has been preserved in very good condition, still retaining two strong hallmarks, one to the side of the lug and one on the case side.

Under the plexiglass crystal, the original silvered dial has taken a naturally warn toffee color. Fresh to the market, the present yellow gold is further more accompanied by its original fitted PP presentation box and Certificate of Origin. The size between the lugs is 20 mm. Dial, case and movement are signed.

The very contemporary and masculine look of this watch along with its freshness to the market, unrestored condition, toffee color dial and full-set makes this watch a great addition for any vintage PP chronograph enthusiasts.
