In 2008 at the Baselfair, the Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA, ref. 116660, is the watch for extreme depths and marine professionals. The model came with a gloss black dial, a newly introduced Ringlock system and featured thicker case than its regular counterpart. To guarantee perfect water-resistance to 3900 meters, the case design had to be completely rethought, compared to the Sea-Dweller 4000, ref. 16660. Rolex introduces a new architecture called RINGLOCK SYSTEM. This patented system is based on a combination of three new innovations: a high performance ring, placed inside the 904L steel case middle of the watch (between the crystal and the case back), a thicker and domed sapphire crystal to better resist pressure, a case back made of titanium alloy, a light and extremely resistant material, held to the case middle by a screwed steel ring, but also a helium valve that allows gases to escape from the case during decompression, and finally the famous Triplock screwed winding crown. The Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA is equipped with an unidirectional rotating steel bezel with a black CERACHROM ceramic disc graduated for immersion times. The movement is the reliable and robust, chronometer-certified, caliber 3135 with a PARACHROM balance spring that is impervious to magnetic fields, with a quick date system and instantaneous date jump. The golss black dial has large luminous white gold indexes.

In 2014, Rolex introduced a new version, fitted this time, with a fading blue to black dial, called D-blue dial, and nicknamed “James Cameron”, has it was a tribute to James Cameron’s expedition to explore and document the deepest part of the ocean where no human has ever conquered in 2012. The Rolex Sea-Dweller model first came in 1967 in collaboration with the COMEX company to design a porfessional diver’s wristwatch able to endure the highest pressures of the deep sea. To achieve such feat, COMEX introduced the helium gas escape valve that enabled gas to be released from the case in a single direction while retaining full waterproof capabilities. All Sea-dweller models are fitted with this Helium Escape Valve, also called H.E.V.

Introduced in 2018, the present watch, Ref. 126660, replaced Ref. 116660, the model is  still fitted with the d-blue dial, but powered with the new caliber 3235, certified chronometer, with PARAFLEX shock-absorbers and PARACHROM hairspring. The Oyster bracelet is also updated, still featuring the OYSTERLOCK deployant clasp, GLIDELOCK and FLIPLOCK adjustments. Dial, case and movement are signed.
