Potter patented inventions, such as a going barrel, patent no. 168’581, dated October 1875, a pivoted detent escapement designed to reduce the angle through which the balance must move in order to unlock the escapement, patent no. 168’582, dated October 1875, thus reducing the risk of 'setting' or stopping in wear, and a plate design, which is a virtual machining from the solid, patent on January 4, 1876. Albert H. Potter (1836-1908) was one of the greatest watchmakers of the second half of the 19th century and, together with Charles Fasoldt, the most renowned American watchmaker. He is characterized by the small number of pieces produced. Making a watch for purely functional purposes has never been his adage and he wanted to priviledge quality. We can note through his creations a particular determination to select high quality materials. Between August and October 1875, he submitted five of his inventions to the US Patent office, including his trademark depicting the also patented compensation balance with auxiliary middle temperature error attachment, a safety barrel, the pivoted detent escapement and a watch plate design. An English patent, No. 2985, was also taken out in 1875 for the same inventions by a patent agent, W. R. Lake, on behalf of Albert Henry Potter of Chicago, Illinois, USA.
