Description:

PATEK PHILIPPE,
“Grande Calatrava Etanche”, Ref. 565J, movement no. 864332, case no. 629484, made in 1942

A very fine, rare and very attractive, water-resistant, 18K yellow gold military style wristwatch with silvered dial, applied gold Breguet numerals, luminous hands, blued steel sweep center second, leather PP strap and 18K yellow gold PP buckle.

Fitted with a caliber 12’’’120SC, rhodium-plated, 20 jewels, manual winding, stamped twice with the Seal of Geneva, indirect center second.

Dial, case and movement signed
Diam. 35 mm. Thickness 11.80 mm.

Accompanied by an Extract from the archives, confirming the production of the present watch in 1942, and its subsequent sale on September 9th, 1943, with a silvered dial and raised Breguet hour markers.

Introduced in 1938 with caliber 12’’’120, the reference 565 is a dressy sport watch. In 1939, Patek Philippe introduced a sweep center seconds “Secondes au Centre” version, with caliber 12 SCI (aka 12 120SC) - in fact a 12’’’120 caliber modified by Victorin Piguet.
The model is fitted with a screw-down case back (a rarity in the 1940’s) and also features an inner soft iron case to shield the movement from the adverse effects of magnetic fields. The case, made by Taubert, is composed of only two parts and is constructed without the usual snap-on bezel, affording further protection from dust and humidity. The case back of the present watch is personally inscribed “CDR. T.G.DEFAY.JR. U.S.N”, (United States Navy). Considering its delivery date on 1943, inscription on case back and luminous hands, the present watch was probably intended for military purposes.
Reference 565 was one of the first Patek Philippe wristwatches to be made in series with a stainless steel case, further highlighting its robust character. The present 565 is in superb condition and is furthermore fitted with the sought-after Breguet numerals, also called “Heures Penchées”, a must for this reference. The timelessly modern design of Ref. 565 served as inspiration for the creation of the 2006 stainless steel inaugural reference 5565.
